How To Become A Retail Manager
Advice from Lisa Matzak, Senior consultant at Hudson Walker International
As the luxury market continues to grow, proactive junior retail managers are becoming highly sought after. Studying at one of the retail academies will give a great insight into what makes a strong retail manager. However, shopfloor experience is crucial so the best route is to combine study with a sales associate role and develop from there.
Luxury labels look for great brand ambassadors for their shopfloor. Strong people and communication skills are valued alongside commercial awareness, a confident and outgoing personality and a hands-on management style. Most reputable retailers will work closely with potential managers to fast track them and may also offer NVQs in retail which will benefit both employer and employee.
The main aspects of the role will include driving sales and ensuring high levels of customer service. Natural business acumen will ensure the right stock arrives at the right time and is displayed in the most attractive way to maximise sales figures. You will act as a mentor to the sales team and be heavily involved in staff recruitment, training and development.
Luxury brands usually pay higher salaries than the high street. Basic salaries are between £25,000 and £40,000 plus bonus and benefits.
